Jean D'YLEN (1886-1938) for CAP CORSE MATTEI - Lot 78
Jean D'YLEN (1886-1938) for CAP CORSE MATTEI "Cap Corse Quinquina L. N. MATTEI", poster known as "LA MAJORETTE". Imprimerie publicité établissements Vercasson, 6 rue Martel, Paris. 2nd edition September 1927. Stamped "Établissements Vercasson Paris". Large color lithographed poster, canvas-backed. 198 x 127 cm. Some folds. Louis-Napoléon MATTEI founded L.N MATTEI in 1872. In 1895, he and his first cousin François MATTEI founded L.N MATTEI et Cie. François took over the company on his death in 1907. From Corsica, François MATTEI became an advertising genius, employing methods that are still in vogue today. In particular, he used product placements in films such as Marcel PAGNOL's "César". But his preferred advertising tool remained the poster. In 1927, he commissioned poster artist Jean d'YLLEN to design "La Majorette". This experienced artist, who had worked with Cartier, Chaumet and leading spirits houses, created the poster we are presenting for sale, which has become emblematic of Établissements MATTEI. Its surprisingly large format and admirable state of preservation suggest that it was displayed in an interior, probably a store. Today, this poster is an important part of our heritage and has great aesthetic qualities.
