Imperial travel document - French Empire, 1808 - Lot 75
Imperial travel document - French Empire, 1808
Printed and partly handwritten certificate of free circulation, issued in 1808 under the reign of Napoleon I. Signed in Tubarque on September 8, 1808, it bears an official red stamp attesting to its authenticity.
Written in the name of Jean-Baptiste Raimbert, French agent in Tarbarque, Kingdom of Tunis, this document attests to the departure of a ship and its crew for Naples. It is a travel authorization that guarantees the bearers of the document freedom of movement, specifying that they must be allowed to pass "freely and safely", without disturbance or hindrance, and enjoy the "privileges due to the French".
This type of document was essential in the XIXᵉ century, particularly in times of war and diplomatic tension, allowing French agents and travelers to circulate in foreign territories under consular protection.
Folds, imperial stamp visible.
