[CORSE-CAMBIAGI Giovacchino] - Lot 9
[CORSE-CAMBIAGI Giovacchino] Istoria del regno di Corsica, 1770-1772. 4 vol. in-4; softbound. ORIGINAL EDITION. The title pages are adorned with an engraved vignette (one repeated on volumes 1 and 4, the other repeated on volumes 2 and 3). Volume III features a superb engraved map of Corsica by Gaspero Pecchioni, 38 x 65 cm (perfect condition). The first volume covers the origins up to 1553 (Sampiero Corso's expedition), the second up to 1725, the third up to 1755 (Pascal Paoli's arrival in Corsica) and the last up to 1771 (i.e. Corsica's cession to France). Very good condition, with very small marginal tears. Giovacchino CAMBIAGI (1747-c.1822) was a Florentine priest committed to the Corsican cause. A man of letters interested in the island even after its annexation by France in 1768, he played a major role in the dissemination of texts opposed to Genoese policy by ensuring their printing. A member of the Société d'instruction publique du département du Golo and the Société centrale d'instruction publique du département de la Corse, his relations with leading insurgents such as Pascal Paoli motivated the writing of this book.
