François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) - Lot 74
François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) "Sunset Lights in the Thuile Glade", study. Oil on paper mounted on cardboard. Traces of thumbtacks on the corners. 23.4 x 30.4 cm. Signature stamp in black (Lugt, L2132A). Former Thiollier collection. Certified on the back by Pierre Andry-Farcy (1882-1950) curator of the Musée de Grenoble. Expert's noteC. Boyer Thiollier: We can certainly situate this oil sketch near the Bois de Thuile (Morestel, Isère), where Ravier liked to visit. He only captured color impressions and the light of the sky. Trees and foliage are merely pretexts and secondary contrasts, enlivened by orange and yellow-green patches. Ravier studied his skies in rapid, nervous strokes, elaborately worked with nimbly brushed crosshairs and chevrons.
