[GOURY DE CHAMPGRAND Jean-François] - Lot 42

[GOURY DE CHAMPGRAND Jean-François] Histoire de l'isle de Corse, contenant en abrégé les principaux événemens de ce pays. Nancy: Abel-Denis Cusson, 1749. 1 vol. small in-8, 296 pp, brown leather binding, smooth spine decorated with gilt flowers and title. Wear to binding, map missing. FIRST EDITION. GOURY DE CHAMPGRAND (1702-1745) was commissioner of wars in Corsica, based in Ajaccio. Here, he draws up a general picture of the various aspects of Corsican culture: criminal statutes, ordinary judges, marriages, rebellions, vengeance, morals, clothing, bishoprics, language, land division, agriculture, geography... This information, acquired during his stay in Corsica in 1739, was easily obtained thanks to his mastery of the Italian language. This didactic approach was intended to inform his compatriots, unaware that Corsica would not remain French after his intervention.
