Letter with autograph signature from Charles Louis comte de - Lot 104
Letter with autograph signature from Charles Louis comte de Marbeuf (1712-1786) to Claude Louis comte de Saint-Germain (1707-1778), Minister of War.
This letter, dated 1776, is interesting for its context, as it refers to the "pursuit of brigands", i.e. those resisting the conquest of Corsica (after May 1769). These are the resistors to the occupation, with an almost explicit allusion to the year 1774, when a general uprising (aborted) was being prepared, of which Marbeuf was aware. When he writes "everything happened during my absence", he is right: he left his second-in-command, General Narbonne, in charge of the repression (affair of the Niolo hangmen), while he in Paris secured political support against Narbonne, who wanted his place.
