Heirs of HOMANN (after) - Lot 124
Heirs of HOMANN (after) "Insulae Corsicae olim Cyrnus dictae novissima facies chorographice. Nuremberg, 1732." Watercolor engraving. 53 x 45 cm (view). Map of Corsica adorned with a title cartouche in the mouth of a sea monster. On one side, a sailor holds a probe, and on the other, a Triton riding a fish and holding a Corsican flag with a Moorish head, sounds the Conque marine (colombo); at the head of the cartouche, a soldier of the Imperial Army, behind him, a fox (representing Genoa), protects himself from the Corsicans in revolt. The sea is decorated with ships and two battle scenes, one between a French ship and a Genoese vessel, the other showing a Corsican galley decked out in flags with a Moorish head pursuing a ship it is cannonading. Homann and his heirs were map publishers in Nuremberg, and for over a hundred years held a leading position in the German cartography market. Some scuffing and light staining.
