[POMMEREUL (François-René-Jean de)] Histoire de l'isle de Corse. Berne, chez la Société typographique, 1779. 2 vol. in-8, hardbound, brown leather spines with partitions and fleurons, title and tomaison. Wear and restoration, title page of volume II missing. FIRST EDITION. Title pages embellished with a copperplate engraving by Balthasar-Anton Dunker depicting an allegory of France pointing to Corsica on a map. WRITTEN IN CORSICAN BY AN ARTILLERY OFFICER IN THE FRENCH EXPEDITIONARY ARMY (1768-1769). Begun in Corte and completed in Bastia, this history offers a direct, structured account of the French expedition to Corsica. It opens with a general presentation of the island, enriched by a reminder of its ancient history, before providing a detailed account of military operations. The author inserts numerous developments devoted to the island's inhabitants, for whom he shows real sympathy, giving the whole a dimension that is both historical and human. FRANÇOIS-RENÉ-JEAN DE POMMEREUL (1745-1823), artillery officer and future general, was one of young Napoleon Bonaparte's examiners at the Brienne military school. Colonel in 1785, he was in Naples during the French Revolution. Thanks to Bonaparte's support, he was removed from the list of émigrés in 1796 and reintegrated into the army, where he pursued a brilliant career as a division general, prefect, Conseiller d'État, then Director General of the Librairie. Outlawed by Louis XVIII, he went into exile from 1815 to 1819. A prolific author, he published several works of his own, as well as various translations from Italian.
