[BONAPARTE FAMILY] - Lot 123
[BONAPARTE FAMILY] Collective portrait of 23 members of the Bonaparte family, captioned with the names of each member among laurel leaves. Napoleon Bonaparte as the central figure at the top of the composition. Oil on canvas. Late 19th century. 65 x 48 cm. Damage and missing parts, restorations. In a natural wood and gilded frame. Provenance: Château de Canari (Cap Corse), Marcantetti family. Château de Canari was the former residence of the Cenci family. The full title of the Cenci de Canari family had been "Barons of Canari, Nonza and Ogliastro" since 1556. The Cenci family thus controlled three baronies. The last representative of the family to own Canari castle was Maria Vittoria Cenci, Marquise d'Albon, who was living in Rome at the time with her French husband. She sold the château to the Mattei family, who in turn sold the barony in 1880 to Toussaint Marcantetti, pharmacist in Bastia and mayor of Canari. His three children were born at the château.
