[PASCAL PAOLI] - Lot 160
[PASCAL PAOLI] Personal stamp of Pascal Paoli in circular copper. Legended "PASQ. DE PAOLI GEN. DEL REG. DI CORSICA". Engraved with the Corsican coat of arms with winged genii carrying coral branches and clubs. With black wooden case lined with green silk. H. 3.7 cm. Diameter: 4 cm. This official seal can be compared to the coins produced at the Zecca mint. A coin wedge is a piece of metal engraved with the imprint of a coin. As successive coins are minted, these coins wear out. As a result, no Corsican coin dies have survived. Nevertheless, it is highly likely that this stamp was made by the engravers who supplied the Zecca de Murato with coins in the 1760s, making it one of the few surviving examples of coinage from this period.
