After D'AUBIGNY - Lot 77
After D'AUBIGNY "View of the interior of the port of Bastia, taken from below the Rock on which the Citadel stands." Engraving on paper. Signed on the plate. Dimensions at the edge of the plate: 25 x 36.8 cm (viewable area). Minor spots. In a gilded wooden frame, glazed. Frame dimensions: 41 x 55 cm. Born in Beauvais in the second half of the 18th century, he entered the Royal Academy in September 1765, where he benefited in particular from the patronage of Jean-Jacques Bachelier. A landscape painter and topographical draftsman, he was sent to Corsica in 1773 to participate, as a draftsman, in the work on the Terrier map. As a member of the surveyors’ office, he also contributed, around 1780, to the *Voyage pittoresque* by the Count of La Borde. In 1793, he was appointed chief draftsman of the Department of Corsica. Evidence of his activity extends into the very early 19th century.
